Random quote: But the question of whether dragons are physically real doesn't make a difference in the end. Dragons are mythic creatures (see "What are dragons?") -- and, therefore, are exceptionally real beings to those who choose to accept the myth. That acceptance is a matter of faith ... the same faith that drives people to turn to Christianity or to scientific skepticism (yes, even being a skeptic requires faith -- faith that everything can be neatly parceled up, explained and understood, a faith which not everyone shares). In his bid to be re-elected to the Senate, John McCain is being challenged by the right-wing former Congressman J.D. Hayworth, a local talk radio big mouth in the city-state of Arizona (Phoenix dominates the state as the population is concentrated there in its metro area, Tuscon forgotten under its wing, and Yuma, the Las Vegas suburbs, and Navaho/Hopi areas an insignificant afterthought...)...and now Minuteman Leader Chris Simcox has dropped out of the race and endorsed Hayworth. In short, though he's ahead in the polls now, McCain's status is quite similar to that of Martha Coakesley at a similar point (anyone remember that idiot who thought she could win by pretending there wasn't an election?).

So, basically, what the Republicans reaped they sowed. The monster they cultivated - the teabaggers, birthers, deathers, anti-vaccinists, xenophobes, crazies, etc. - has returned to bite them in the ass. McCain may be the first casualty of this monster but if so he won't be the last. Mark it.

Oh fuck I hope they get a wingnut. I hope all the republicans that win this term are mad as hatters.

Texas Lynn, when you run across the particularly good examples, it would be great if you could start a thread on them. This batch of wingnuts needs one more time around (not in positions like committee chairs or POTUS or anything, just freshman congress-people or something like that) to generate the sound, video and tongue bites necessary to seal this group's place as a unique and distinct tassel on the lunatic fringe of the carpet recording the wingnut annals of history.

A place to sweep the dust.
